Scripture:
Romans 8: 12-16
Main Verse:
Romans 8: 14
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
Observation:
We have the privilege of being called a child of God, and we can call Him our "Father." It is the Spirit who testifies to us and to others about this truth. But how do we know that we are a child of God? Is there a way for us to know? If we live according to the Spirit, we set our minds on the things of the Spirit (v.5). We no longer do what our flesh desires. We let go of anger, bitterness, resentment, hatred, and every negative thought. We do not walk according to what we think is right. We walk according to what the Spirit dictates as right. A mind that is set on the Spirit has peace, but a mind that is set on the flesh is hostile and does not submit to God's law (vv.6-7). A mind that is filled by the Spirit of God is obedient to the Lord at all times.
Application:
Our actions must always be based on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. When our reactions are motivated by our emotions, the consequences are almost always disastrous. But when our lives are led by the Spirit, we have peace because the Spirit will never point us to do the wrong thing. If we consider ourselves children of God, we will walk according to what the Holy Spirit dictates us to do. We choose to do what the Father tells us, not what our flesh tells us. That is called obedience. Jesus followed the Father's will. He faithfully obeyed God when He sacrificed Himself on the cross. Even though it was difficult, he chose God's way. That's how we grow into mature Christians.
Prayer:
Father, I thank you for sending your Holy Spirit to guide me and point me to the right path. I want to grow more and be led by your Spirit. Teach me, Lord, to be obedient to you at all times. Help me follow the ways of the Spirit, so I can become perfectly mature in time. In Jesus's name I pray. AMEN.
