Daily Devotion: No Stumbling Blocks!

Scripture:
2 Corinthians 6: 1-13

Main Verse:
2 Corinthians 6: 3
We put no stumbling block in anyone's path, so that our ministry will not be discredited.

Observation:
A dictionary meaning of the phrase "stumbling block" states that it is "a hindrance to progress, belief, or understanding." To be able to understand why Paul in 2 Corinthians 6 stated verse 3, we need to understand the context in which the written verse occured. Paul stated the hardships that he had been through and continues to go through (vv. 4-10). But at the end of the list, he directly mentioned having spoken his mind to the Corinthian church. He has shown his affection to them by speaking the truth because it was his sincere desire for the church to grow. But despite what he had done, they have withheld their affection (v.12). Paul wanted the Corinthian church to understand that despite all the hardships that he had to endure, he would never put any stumbling blocks, any form hindrance that would prevent them from growing in their life as followers of Christ.

Application:
Most Christians define "stumbling block" as an action that causes others especially the weaker or young believers to sin. But in 2 Corinthians 6: 3, Paul was talking about how he, as an apostle on a mission, had to go through a great deal of suffering so that the Gospel of Jesus may be proclaimed and he can fulfill his calling for the Lord. As we continue with our journey as disciples of Christ, there will be many obstacles--stumbling blocks--that may cause us to feel discouraged in our ministry for the Lord, especially when we speak the truth. But we can look at Paul's life as an example of what he had been through because of his passion for the Lord's ministry. Our goal is to spread the truth to others out of love, but in all humility and boldness despite the struggles. The truth hurts, people always say, but we speak the truth so that others may be strengthened.

Prayer:
Lord, I can never equal the difficulties and sacrifice you had to endure for the forgiveness of my sins and my salvation. I pray that I may always speak the truth out of love. Guide my thoughts and guard my heart. Let me be an inspiration and your Words a source of blessing to others. This I pray and ask in your Mighty Name. AMEN.
