Daily Devotion: The Fear of the Lord

Psalms 128:1-4 Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your sons will be like olive shoots around your table. Thus is the man blessed who fears the Lord.

Psalms 111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.

Today, my brother-in-law's wife mentioned that while reading the book of Isaiah, she saw a scary God. She told me that she thought that God is love, but she could not imagine that God could do such a thing to Israel.

Should we fear God? Yes, but that fear should be rooted in the fact that God hates sin because of His Holy nature. It is this fear that should help us regard God with the highest respect and reverence. It is this fear of the Lord that will help prevent us from breaking his commands.

The God I know is a loving God, but I do know that He is also a just God. I hope I get another chance to talk with her and help her understand that God is a loving Father to those who want to truly follow Him and live a holy life, but He will also never allow sin because as His creation, He wants what is best for us. He wants us to receive his grace, love, and mercy.
