Scripture:
Ephesians 5: 25-30
Main Verse:
Ephesians 5: 28
Husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
Observation:
I was contemplating whether I should write a journal entry that talks about how husbands should should treat their wives, or to just look for a different Bible passage. But the more I read the verse, the more that I felt the urge to write about it. Perhaps husbands should consider Ephesians 5: 28 as their memory verse. It is not just a reminder but more of a command. 1 Peter 3: 7 reminds husbands once again "to be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers." "Weaker" here has nothing to do with treating women as inferior beings; rather, husbands ought to honor their wives and to show them that they are worth loving. Above all else, to love our neighbors is God's second greatest commandment: "My command is this: Love each other in the same way I have loved you" (John 15:12).
Application:
Husbands should love their wives not only because it is a direct command from the Lord but because it is the right thing to do. When you enter the solemn act of marriage, you promise to honor her and treat her with respect, and you enter into an agreement not only with God. I have been to a couple of weddings, and the exchange of vows is usually one of the most awaited events. Church weddings usually ask both man and woman to exchange their vows and promises in front of their family, friends and guests that they are entering a covenant to be a loving and faithful husband/wife, in plenty and want, in joy and in sorrow, in sickness and in health, as long as they both shall live. In the context of Ephesians 5:28, when Paul exhorted that husbands ought to love their wives as they love themselves, he was reminding men that as man and woman become husband and wife, they become one body; therefore, he must love and respect this union that he has entered into.
Prayer:
Father, I know that you are speaking to the hearts of husbands out there. May their hearts be capable of loving their wives more than their love for themselves. May their words and actions show that they honor and esteem their wives highly. May they look upon Jesus as the greatest example of love that is willing to sacrifice himself for the welfare of others. Bless those husbands who unconditionally love their wives. In Jesus's name I pray. AMEN.
