Daily Devotion: A Solid Foundation

Scripture:
Matthew 7: 24-27

Main Verse:
Matthew 7: 24-25
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

Observation:
Jesus showed us a parable comparing two people who hears his Words to two people who built their houses. One house had a strong foundation because it was built on bedrock, while the other house had a weak foundation because it was built on sand. Naturally, when storms came, the house that had a strong foundation was able to withstand the winds and strong rains.

The Lord is teaching us that we get tested by the storms of this life-- economic difficulties, suffering, sickness or even death. No one is exempted. A foolish person, however, will think that he can do all things on his own and try to solve his problems without seeking the Lord's help. But a wise person knows that without the Lord at his side, he can never survive the storms of life.

Application:
What does the Lord want to show us in the parable of the wise and foolish builders?
If we are wise believers and followers of Christ, we should know that we need to build the foundation of our lives on Jesus. We need to follow His instructions at all times and recognize that we are weak so that in our weakness, He can make us strong. We ought to be doers of His Word and not just listeners (James 1:22). We must admit to ourselves that we are poor and destitute and that without Jesus as our solid foundation, we cannot survive the storms of this life. We are not immune to problems and difficulties. As regular people, we experience all kinds of trouble. But our hope is in our Rock, our Refuge, our Source of Strength, and our Deliverer. HIS NAME IS JESUS!

Prayer:
My Lord, thank you for reminding me that you are my rock and my refuge.  Forgive me when I sometimes fail to recognize you as the foundation of my life. Help me become a better follower of you and always give me the wisdom so I can follow your instruction at all times. AMEN.
