Daily Devotion: The Confidence to Call on God as Our Father

Scripture:
John 1:1-18

Main Verses:
John 1:12-13
12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

Observation:
There are several characteristics of Jesus that John enumerated in the first chapter. Some of them are as follows:
1. Jesus is God. (verse 1)
2. He is there from the beginning and all things were created by Him and through him along with the Father. (verses 2-3)
3. He gives life. (verse 4)
4. He is the light of the world. (verse 5)
5. He became man and dwelt among men. (verse 14)
6. He is the One and Only Son. (verse 14)
7. The Son and the Father are one, and only the Son has a close relationship with the Father. (verse 18)

What do we learn from these? First, John wanted to establish that Jesus was already with the Father from the beginning. Since Jesus was with God the Father, He alone is in closest relationship with the Father. Only Jesus has seen the Father, but the Father has given us a chance to become his adopted children through his Son. If we receive his Son, He will give us the privilege to become his children. God is indeed a gracious Father to all, but only if we will readily and willingly accept His Son into our lives as our Lord and Savior.

Application:
It is truly amazing to know that as believers in Christ, we can call on God as our Father. It is an honor to be given this privilege! As sinners from the beginning, we did not deserve to be called his children, but He gave us this right through his Son Jesus. The Lord wants us to have an intimate relationship with Him as his children. We have the confidence to approach the Father as his adopted children because we have Jesus, who has a close relationship with the Father, to mediate for us. We can boldly call on the Father and tell him whatever is in our heart, and the Father also wants to hear from us because he cares about us.

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for giving me the right to call you "Father" and to tell you whatever is in my heart. I am unworthy, yet you have made me worthy unto your sight because of your Son Jesus. May I always remember your grace and mercy, and may I always have the confidence to approach you and communicate with you all the days of my life. AMEN.
