Scripture:
Mark 9: 17-29
Main Verses:
Mark 9: 22b-24 "But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us." "'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for one who believes." Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"
Observation:
It was evident in today's passage that the father of the possessed son lacked faith in Jesus when he asked Him to heal his son. Maybe he did not really know who Jesus is. Or perhaps, he was still doubtful about who Jesus claims He is. Either way, he did not fully believe that the Lord can cast the demon out. So the Lord addressed the man's faith, telling him that everything is possible if he believes. The good thing about the man is that he was quick to admit his shortcoming. He immediately told the Lord to help him overcome his unbelief.
Application:
When we ask someone for assistance, we sometimes use words like "Kung pwede sana" (If it is possible) or "Kung magagawa mong..." (If you can). The reason we ask the person in this manner is that we are not sure whether the person can really help us with whatever we have asked him or her to do. But when we ask something from the Lord, we should not use such phrases. We should instead acknowledge that the Lord is great, our Supreme God, who can do everything! We should never have an ounce of doubt when we ask the Lord to solve a problem for us, or help us in times of trouble. If the Lord can pacify a raging sea by simply telling it to stop, how much more the problems that we have? Jesus can turn the impossible into possible. Let us remember the Lord's words in Mark 9: 23, "Everything is possible for one who believes."
Prayer:
Lord, you are Almighty and Powerful God. Your greatness is beyond measure. Your name is above all names. May I always put my 100% faith in you, and may I always remember the great and mighty things you have done and you can do to and for your people. AMEN.
