Daily Devotion: The Promise of His Return

Scripture:
2 Peter 3: 3-10

Main Verse:
2 Peter 3: 8
But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

Observation:
Before our Lord Jesus was taken up to heaven, He promised His disciples and followers that He will come back in the same way that they have seen Him go up to heaven (Acts 1:11). Several years have passed, but his disciples still faithfully wait for the day that the Lord will return. In today's verse, Peter reminds us that God's perception of time is not the same ours. The Lord is not simply delaying His return; rather, He wants everyone to come to repentance so that no one will perish  (v. 9).

Application:
Have you ever experienced getting or being stood up by someone? Perhaps on a date, your date never arrived. How did you feel? Several centuries have passed since Jesus ascended to heaven, yet we still cling on to His promised return. Why? Because we know and believe that the Lord will never stand us up. He will faithfully fulfill His promise. It doesn't matter whether we wait for a day, for a year, or for a thousand years. We have the assurance that He will come back to bring His elect to the place that He has been preparing for them (John 14: 2-3).

Prayer:
Lord, you are a faithful God, and you always deliver your promises. I will faithfully wait and hope that you will take me with you when you return. May I be prepared and worthy in your sight on your second coming. AMEN.
