Daily Devotion: Test of Character

Scripture:
1 Samuel 24: 1-15

Main Verse:
1 Samuel 24: 6-7
He said to his men, "The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord's anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord." With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.

Observation:
The Lord has a purpose why he lets us experience affliction. Take the case of David. Before he became king, Saul attempted to kill him numerous times that David was left wondering why his king, the person he considered his father, treats him as an enemy. But he did not bear a grudge against Saul. For David, he is still God anointed one, and to even think about harming Saul is such a detestable crime to him.

God could have easily used His powers to dethrone Saul so that David can finally become king and fulfill His promise. But why the long wait? Why did David have to go through such pain and hardship? I believe it is because God wanted to mold his character. God wanted to test David's heart. God wanted to know whether David will still be obedient if He lets him suffer or he will follow what his emotion dictates him to feel. In the end, David chose to obey, never giving in to the lure of offense.

Application:
When we are offended, we often do things that we think "feel" right instead of searching for God's Word. God does not want us to do what is popular, acceptable, or normal reaction. God wants us to act according to His will. So when we feel frustrated at a situation or mad at someone who has caused us harm, let us find solace in God's Word. Remember that the Lord will not put us in distressing or afflictive situations to harm us, but to strengthen our faith and refine our character so we may become spiritually mature and prepared. Are you ready for God's promise of a succesful, prosperous, and victorious life?

Prayer:
My Lord Jesus, I know that You are preparing me for something greater. Please be my perfect Shepherd and may I be filled with your abundant love, so I can share this love to the people around me. Renew my spirit everyday, and strengthen my faith, so I can survive the struggles that I am faced with everyday. Thank you for your promise that you will never leave me nor forsake me. I have the assurance of a victorious life because of our presence. AMEN.
