Daily Devotion: Keep A Close Watch

Scripture:
1 Timothy 4: 1-16

Main Verse:
1 Timothy 4: 16
Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Observation:
Timothy was a young pastor when Paul wrote him letters and instructions on how to live a godly life and set a good example to the church he was leading. As a young man, it must not have been easy for Timothy to lead a church, so Paul encouraged him to use his spiritual gifts, to be consistent in his faith, and to persevere. Paul also warned him about false doctrines and to have a discerning spirit, and make sure to detect and avoid them. Why was Paul telling all these things to Timothy? As a pastor, Timothy was accountable to his people. He had to make sure that he practices what he preaches, detect errors in doctrines and look for unbiblical teachings.

Application:
There are three commands contained in 1 Timothy 4:16: Watch what you say, be careful how you live, and stand firm and press on. The context of this verse is about pastoral ministry, but we can also apply the same scripture in our lives. We must remember and acknowledge the Word of God as our infallible guidance. When in doubt about a doctrine you've heard, check its truthfulness by verifying it in the Bible. Second, as Christians, our lives are always on the limelight. People around us will judge us based on how we act and talk, and if what we preach contradicts our actions, then we are not setting a good model to others or worse, we become a stumbling block to a brother or sister in Christ. Finally, let us persevere. Be on our guard, be mindful of the doctrines that we listen to and teach to others, and stay persistent to the end. Do not grow weary of doing these things and remember the Lord's promise to the faithful!

Prayer:
Indeed, my Lord, the walk towards righteousness is not easy, and I must be careful with my actions and my speech. Lord, help me guard my heart and my thoughts. May your Word be my source of instruction and guidance at all times,  so I may not fall into misleading teachings. Help me be more persistent and not grow weary of following your instructions. May I always have a heart that loves to fulfill your commands. I pray and ask in your Most Holy Name. AMEN.
