Daily Devotion: The Spirit That Dwells in Us

Scripture:
Romans 8: 1-17

Main Verse:
Romans 8: 16. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

Observation:
As children of God, we have the assurance that we will no longer be condemned from our past sins (v. 1). Jesus Christ has bore our sins on the cross; our spirits are no longer condemned to die. If we acknowledge that Christ is in us, then the Holy Spirit also dwells in us. The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives is evidence that we are children of God. It is proof that we can hold on to.

How wonderful it is to be called "child of God!" We are adopted children and we share this glory with Christ. And if Christ can call God "Father," we also have the freedom to call Him "Our Father." The Holy Spirit is our witness. He can never lie.

Application:
Therefore, because the Holy Spirit testifies that we are children of God, we should be good witnesses to others of the truth that Christ dwells in us. We are obliged to live according to the spirit because the Holy Spirit dwells in us. We are not under the bondage of fleshly desires and we can victoriously overcome them. The Holy Spirit leads us so we can bear fruit and shows us how we can accomplish this. Galatians 5: 22-23 tells us that as Christians we must possess "the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."

Prayer:
Father, thank you for loving me and giving me this great opportunity to call you Father. I pray that my life may be worthy of the sacrifice that your Son Jesus did on the cross. May the Holy Spirit continue to dwell in me so that I can be fruitful and others may witness that Christ dwells in me. AMEN.
