Daily Devotion: Our Lord's Supper

Scripture:
1 Corinthians 11: 17-34

Main Verse
1 Corinthians 11: 29
For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.

Observation:
The Apostle Paul cautioned the Corinthian church to be careful about a few things as regards church relations and the sacred doctrine of the Lord's Supper. First, he reminded them about avoiding divisions among themselves. Second, he also reiterated the importance of the Lord's Supper, how it should be carried out, and what could happen to someone who does not examine himself or herself before partaking in the bread and the cup of the Lord. Paul in particular wanted the Corinthians to view the Lord's Supper as a sacred act carried out by members of the church. It is not a simple lunch or dinner event. It is done in remembrance of the Lord's sacrifice for us.

Application:
The Lord's Supper is something that all true believers of Jesus Christ must follow because it reminds us of the sacrificial body and blood of our Lord. I am no expert in the doctrines of the church but I sincerely believe that when we receive the bread and cup, we are united in Him. We "commune" with Him. It is therefore important that we prepare ourselves for this Holy ceremony. We should not treat the Lord's Supper lightly but do it in the most reverent way that shows our appreciation for our Father's  graciousness and mercy. We should check our heart and ask for forgiveness if we have done anything wrong. We should remember that because Jesus lives in us, He is in us so our heart, body, and soul should be ready, pure, and acceptable in God's sight.

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for you sacrifice on the cross. Thank you for the body you have offered and your blood that you shed for the forgiveness of my sins. Thank you that you have taught your disciples and followers a way to remember you. May I always keep in my mind that when I take the bread and cup that symbolizes your body and blood, I am united with you and that I need you in my life. AMEN.
