Scripture:
Romans 7: 7-25
Main Verse:
Romans 7: 24-25
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.
Observation:
Today's Sunday sermon is a reminder of the characteristic of sin. When we think of sin, we only think about how ugly and despicable it is. We have this idea that only murder, stealing, and those listed in the Ten Commandments are considered sins. But we must remember that Satan is deceptively clever; he presents sin in a beautifully wrapped box, waiting for us to uncover its contents. The apostle Paul knew that he cannot live up to the standards of the Law, no matter how hard he tried to obey the Law. But the Lord Jesus Christ delivered him from the wretchedness of sin! He acknowledged that he cannot escape the temptations of sin, but with Jesus in him, he had the assurance that there is no more condemnation, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set him free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:1-2).
Application:
As Christians, we must flee from sin. We must learn to recognize sin as something that can harm our spirit. We must never linger in it or even entertain temptation when it enters our mind because the minute we give in to sin, it will create a spiritual gap between us and God. What can we do? The apostle Paul tells us that instead of running toward sin, we must run after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness (1 Timothy 6:11). And when we find it hard to resist sin, ask the Holy Spirit for help. The Lord knows that our flesh is weak, so He gave us the Holy Spirit to strengthen our spirit and help us flee from spiritual dangers.
Prayer:
Lord, you are my source of strength when my flesh is weak. Thank you that I have a Helper in the form of the Holy Spirit, who reminds me of the dangers of sin. Help me to always discern the works of the enemy so that I can flee from spiritual dangers and I will not fall into the enemy's traps. All these I pray in your Precious and Mighty Name. AMEN.
