Daily Devotion: An Untroubled Heart

Scripture:
Matthew 6: 25-34

Main Verse:
Matthew 6: 25. "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Observation:
I had a few opportunities to watch fishermen arrive at the port bringing their catch of the day. It is an amazing sight to see boats arriving with their tubs full of fish. What's even more amazing is how the ocean provides fishermen with their catch, and where the fishes get their food. Of course we know that fish eat whatever food the ocean can provide for them, but isn't it amazing how they never need to be fed by man just so they will grow?

The trees in the forest grow tall and mighty, yet no one waters them nor gives them fertilizer. The birds in the forest have their supply of worms and fruit and flowers. The fishes are well fed by the ocean, but no one feeds them. It is because the Lord takes care of all His creation.

Application:
It is for this reason that Jesus reminded us to stop worrying about everything. The Lord wants to teach us that He can handle any kind of situation, and that He can provide for our basic needs. All we have to do is trust that God will work in our midst because we are more important than any of His creations! (v. 26) The Lord wants us to put our hope in Him. Let us remember that when we worry, we are sinning. In v. 34, the Lord explicitly commands His followers: "So do not worry about tomorrow." It is a command. Instead, following God's will should be our top priority.

Prayer:
Father, thank you for your promise of provision. You are eternally my Great Provider, our source of hope! May I always remember your commands and seek to follow your will at all times. Teach me to always trust in you and lean not on my own understanding. AMEN.
